You agree to the privacy policy below, and the Privacy Policy for Substack, the technology provider.
Privacy Policy
I take your privacy seriously — and given that the entire premise of this publication is transparency and verified data, it would be somewhat hypocritical not to.
Who is responsible for your data
Cohong Lane is operated by Philip Reschke, an individual based in Hong Kong. There is no separate corporate entity at this time.
For any privacy-related questions, contact: hello@cohonglane.com.
What data I collect
Information you provide
Email address — required when you subscribe to the newsletter or create a free account.
Name — optional. You may provide it when subscribing or modifying your profile, but I do not require it.
Information collected automatically
Technical data — IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, and approximate geographic location (country/city).
Usage data — Pages viewed, session duration, referral source, and other aggregate analytics.
This data is collected through Substack’s built-in first-party analytics. I do not use third-party advertising trackers, retargeting pixels, or cross-site tracking tools.
Information I do not collect
Payment data. Cohong Lane does not currently offer paid subscriptions or process any payments. No payment card details or billing information are collected or stored. If this changes, this policy will be updated before any paid services are introduced.
Sensitive personal data. I do not knowingly collect data concerning health, political opinions, religious beliefs, or similar categories.
Why I collect your data
Data Purpose Legal basis Email address To deliver the newsletter and manage your subscription Your consent (by subscribing) Name (if provided) To personalise email greetings Your consent (by providing it) Technical and usage data To operate, secure, and improve the publication; to understand aggregate readership patterns Legitimate interest in maintaining and improving the publication
Third-party service providers
Cohong Lane is published on Substack. Substack processes subscriber data (email, name) and publication analytics on my behalf. Substack’s own privacy policy is available at substack.com/privacy.
I do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any other third parties for their own purposes. If additional service providers are introduced in future — for example, a payment processor when paid subscriptions launch — this policy will be updated accordingly.
Cookies and tracking
Substack’s built-in analytics are designed to be lightweight and first-party. The site uses functional cookies necessary for the operation of the members and subscription system — for example, to keep you logged in.
I do not use third-party advertising or marketing cookies. If this changes, I will update this policy and provide appropriate notice.
Data retention
Subscriber data (email and name) is retained for as long as you remain a member of the site.
Unsubscribed members: If you unsubscribe from the newsletter, your account remains active so you can still log in and view content, but you will no longer receive emails.
Deletion: If you wish to fully delete your account and all associated data, please contact hello@cohonglane.com and I will manually remove you from the system.
Technical and usage data is retained in aggregate form and is not linked to individual subscriber identities for longer than necessary.
Your rights
Under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) of Hong Kong, you have the right to:
Access the personal data I hold about you.
Correct any inaccurate personal data.
Request deletion/erasure where applicable — you can ask me to delete your member profile; unsubscribing stops emails but does not delete your account automatically.
If you are located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, you may also have additional rights under the GDPR, including the right to data portability, the right to restrict processing, and the right to object to processing, and requests will be handled where applicable.
To exercise any of these rights, contact: hello@cohonglane.com.
Data security
I take reasonable steps to protect your data from unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Substack provides enterprise-grade infrastructure, SSL encryption, and regular security updates.
That said, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure. I cannot guarantee absolute security — and anyone who tells you they can is not being honest.
Children
Cohong Lane is not directed at anyone under the age of 18. I do not knowingly collect data from minors.
Changes to this policy
I may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the publication or newsletter. The “Last updated” date at the top indicates the most recent revision.
